Functional Elements of the Orthosis
What are the functional elements of the orthosis?
Different functions of an orthosis can be realised through different functional elements of an orthosis. The basic categories of the orthosis functions are as follows:
- counterbalancing of lacking or reduced muscle strength with ground reaction forces
- compensation of leg length discrepancies and absent lever lengths
- proprioception through sensory relevant contact surfaces and individual safety support
- stabilisation of deformities
- correction of e.g. changes due to growth.
Why do we describe the functional elements of the orthosis?
The functional elements of an orthosis are meant to provide an overview of the various possibilities for influencing the functions of an orthosis.
Despite the different alternatives - for making the model, modifications, production and production techniques, the patient-specific requirements and preferences of the orthotist as well as the usable methods and materials - the functional elements of an orthosis are always the same.
