NEURO MATIC System Knee Joint

The NEURO MATIC system knee joint is suitable for the production of a custom-made KAFO (knee-ankle-foot orthosis) with mechanical stance phase control. An orthosis with stance phase control with the NEURO  MATIC system knee joint offers the patient safety in stance phase (mechanically locked) and dynamic movement in swing phase (mechanically unlocked) when walking. Thus, a natural gait can be achieved.

The automatic locking mechanism of the NEURO MATIC system knee joint is controlled by the plantar flexion of the ankle joint. During loading response, once the heel has touched the ground, a natural plantar flexion of the ankle joint occurs. A mechanical connection between the system ankle joint of the orthosis and the locking mechanism of the NEURO MATIC results in the locking of the system knee joint. During swing phase, the system knee joint is unlocked so that the leg can swing freely with a bent knee. The system joint is preassembled at an angle of 5°, corresponding to a physiological knee joint angle.

The NEURO MATIC allows the patient to choose between the following modes via a mechanical lever, depending on the situation:

  • Auto mode: when walking, the system joint secures the knee against unwanted bending during stance phase by automatically locking it. In the swing phase, it automatically unlocks it again.
  • Free mode: the system joint is permanently unlocked.
  • Lock Mode: the system joint is permanently locked.

The possibility of changing the mode helps to master different everyday situations. The Free mode is suitable e.g. for driving or cycling, whilst the Lock mode is helpful in situations where there is an increased need for safety. The patient can change the mode with the lever of the system joint.

Advantages of an orthosis with a NEURO MATIC knee joint

  1. very small, purely mechanical system knee joint
  2. orthosis with this system knee joint can be worn under trousers
  3. designed specifically for the construction of a custom-made orthosis with full contact – anatomical shape and close fitting to the leg
  4. lightweight system joint enables the construction of a lightweight orthosis (1.1–1.4kg)
  5. characteristics mentioned in points 1 to 4 prevent disruptive rotational moments on the paralysed patient’s leg
  6. locking at any knee angle provides maximum safety when walking – even on slopes and uneven ground
  7. permanent unlocking of the system joint possible, e.g. for driving or cycling
  8. no electronics – no need to charge a battery
  9. no certification required due to FIOR & GENTZ 360° orthotics
  10. no test fitting necessary – functional analysis and calculation are carried out by the Orthosis Configurator taking into account all patient data
  11. unilateral construction possible
