AFO with a NEURO SWING System Ankle Joint

This success story is about a patient who, following a traffic accident in 2005, underwent an amputation of her left lower leg and right forefoot along the transmetatarsal joint line, also known as a Lisfranc amputation.

The initial treatment consisted of a forefoot prosthesis according to Bellmann on the right foot. As can be clearly seen in the before video, this did not allow for a heel lift in terminal stance or sufficient control in loading response. Even when standing, the forefoot prosthesis alone did not provide sufficient stability. The patient attempted to compensate for this lack of stability when walking with compensation mechanisms, which in turn led to an excessive load on her left leg, which was treated with a lower leg prosthesis.

For the new treatment, the medical supply store therefore produced an AFO with a NEURO SWING system ankle joint from FIOR & GENTZ in combination with a forefoot prosthesis according to Bellmann. The after video clearly shows how the patient is able to distribute her weight evenly across both legs again, reducing the load on the prosthesis. The dynamic dorsiflexion stop reactivates the forefoot lever and supports her in standing and walking safely. The result is a significantly more physiological gait, improved stability and a noticeably better quality of life. The patient can once again walk long distances and is looking forward to playing golf again.
