KAFO with NEURO HiTRONIC System Knee Joint and NEURO HiSWING R+ System Ankle Joint

The patient in this video suffered a whiplash trauma with secondary spinal canal stenosis with resulting minor non-functional left body side caused by a water-slide accident. A revision surgery in 2022 (replacement of cages in the cervical spine area C5/6 and C6/7) was followed by the hemiparesis diagnosis. At first, the patient faced her everyday challenges with a preproduced knee orthosis aiming to restore the moveability of her left leg. But this KO could neither relieve her foot spasms nor her aching neck. She received her first custom-made orthosis, a KAFO with the electromechanical NEURO TRONIC system knee joint, in the summer of 2023.

Due to her particularly high activity level, the ORTHO-TEAM Luzern has now produced a KAFO with electrohydraulic FIOR & GENTZ system joints for their patient. At ankle height, they placed a NEURO HiSWING R+ and at knee height the NEURO HiTRONIC. With her new orthosis, the patient gains increased stability while walking and is more mobile than ever. The video shows her at her favourite activity, going for a hike. Thanks to its integrated hydraulics, she can easily adjust the system ankle joint to inclines or slopes. Going up- or downhill is therefore much smoother. She herself says: “With the new treatment, my gait is much softer, and I falter less. Another noteworthy advantage is that the hydraulic joint is very silent. It is quite uncomfortable and annoying when each step is accompanied by a loud clacking sound.”
