Summary: For an effective orthotic treatment of patients with cerebral palsy choosing the right orthosis is of paramount importance. Since the orthosis influences the pathological gait, the latter needs to be the decisive factor in this choice. This requires a simple but adequate classification of the gait pattern of CP patients. In the development of the Neuro Swing system ankle joint which was designed, among other things, to meet the requirements for treating CP patients, the Amsterdam Gait Classification turned out to be the optimal one. In the present article, the forms of treatment and the gait pattern classification of CP patients are discussed firstly, since this is necessary for a proper orthotic treatment. Afterwards, orthoses for different gait types when using the Neuro Swing system ankle joint are presented.
