Functional Elements of the Orthosis

What are the functional elements of the orthosis?

Different functions of an orthosis can be realised through different functional elements‎ of an orthosis. The basic categories of the orthosis functions are as follows:

  • counterbalancing of lacking or reduced muscle strength with ground reaction forces
  • compensation of leg length discrepancies and absent lever lengths
  • proprioception through sensory relevant contact surfaces and individual safety support
  • stabilisation of deformities
  • correction of e.g. changes due to growth.

Why do we describe the functional elements of the orthosis?
The functional elements‎ of an orthosis are meant to provide an overview of the various possibilities for influencing the functions of an orthosis.

Despite the different alternatives - for making the model, modifications, production and production techniques, the patient-specific requirements and preferences of the orthotist as well as the usable methods and materials - the functional elements of an orthosis are always the same.
