Joint Assembly

NEURO SWING System Ankle Joint

In order for the NEURO SWING system ankle joint to work properly, the correct assembly of the system joint is essential. You will find technical data and further information in the manual of the NEURO SWING system ankle joint. For example, you can find information on the torque (Nm) for all system widths here.

Step 1/20

To demount the cover plate, proceed as follows:

  • Unscrew both countersunk flat head screws.
  • Place the washer on the cover plate and screw the pressing screw into the thread of the second screw. The pressing screw must not be screwed in completely.
  • Push the joint's upper part and the cover plate apart by exerting force on them as illustrated (see arrows). This can be achieved by using a vice or by controlled knocks.
  • Remove pressing screw and washer.

Step 2/20

Clean the system joint. In order to clean the threads in the cover plate, use the Super Clean LOCTITE® 7063 to remove any insulating wax residues.
Note: Mind the safety data sheet when using the Super Clean LOCTITE® 7063.

Step 3/20

Apply spray adhesive to one side of the first sliding washer and adhere it to the cover plate. Grease the other side of the sliding washer slightly with the delivered orthosis joint grease.

Step 4/20

Use the delivered cover plate pressing aid to join the joint's upper part with the cover plate. Tighten the pressing screw with the corresponding torque.
Note: You can find information on the torque (Nm) for all system widths in the manual of the relevant system joint.

Step 5/20

Remove the pressing screw and the washer.
In order to fix the cover plate for the next work steps, turn in the first countersunk flat head screw with a torque which corresponds to the system width.

Step 6/20

Make sure there is no opening left between the cover plate and the joint's upper part.

Step 7/20

Grease the second sliding washer slightly with the delivered orthosis joint grease.

Step 8/20

Place the second sliding washer onto the medial side of the system stirrup.

Step 9/20

Place the system stirrup from below between the cover plate and the joint's upper part. Make sure that the sliding washer remains in the correct position.

Step 10/20

Check if the sliding washer fits well.

Step 11/20

Grease the friction surfaces of the bearing nut slightly with the delivered orthosis joint grease.

Step 12/20

Put the bearing nut into the intended opening of the joint's upper part and make sure that it is in the correct position. Fix the bearing nut from the backside with one finger.

Step 13/20

Keep your finger in place. Turn in the second countersunk flat head screw (axle screw) with a torque which corresponds to the system width.
If you have damaged a sliding washer during the assembly of the cover plate (you would hear a soft cracking), remove the particles and place a new sliding washer.
Note: You can find information on the torque (Nm) for all system widths in the manual of the relevant system joint.

Step 14/20

Bring the system joint in plantar flexion/dorsiflexion. If the system joint does not move freely, mount the next thinner sliding washers, repeat all steps from step 7 onwards and check again.
Note: Check if the system joint moves freely before mounting the spring units. At a bilateral orthosis, only check one system joint at a time.

Step 15/20

Fix the tibial shell and try to move the foot shell in pronation-supination. If the system joint runs with lateral play, mount the next thicker sliding washers, repeat all steps from step 7 onwards and check again.
Note: Check if the system joint runs with lateral play before mounting the spring units. At a bilateral orthosis, only check one system joint at a time.

Step 16/20

Secure both screws with LOCTITE® 243 with medium strength and the torque corresponding to the system width. Let the adhesive harden (final strength after approx. 24 hours).
Note: You can find information on the torque (Nm) for all system widths in the manual of the relevant system joint.
Note: Mind the safety data sheet when using
LOCTITE® 243 medium strength.

Step 17/20

Stick the screw unit onto the spring unit. The integrated O-ring fixes the spring unit so that it does not tilt during walking.

Step 18/20

Now, place a sub-assembly, consisting of spring unit and screw unit, in the anterior spring duct. Turn in the spring unit until the required alignment of the orthosis is achieved. At a bilateral orthosis with two NEURO SWING system joints, mount each system joint’s anterior spring unit and make sure that both system joints are adjusted alike. At a bilateral orthosis with a medial support joint, the range of motion of the NEURO SWING system joint should be limited without being restricted by the medial support joint. You might need to file off the stops of the medial support joint’s system stirrup.
Note: Check the joint angle by reading the markings on the system stirrup and the cover plate.

Step 19/20

Now, turn in a sub-assembly in the posterior spring duct until it touches the system stirrup. At a bilateral orthosis with two NEURO SWING system joints, mount each system joint’s posterior spring unit and make sure that both system joints are adjusted alike. At a bilateral orthosis with a medial support joint, the range of motion of the NEURO SWING system joint should be limited without being restricted by the medial support joint. You might need to file off the stops of the medial support joint’s system stirrup.
Note: Check the joint angle by reading the markings on the system stirrup and the cover plate.

Step 20/20

Bring the system joint in plantar flexion/dorsiflexion. It should move by compression of the spring unit only. At a high spring force, it might be impossible to cause any movement manually.
If the system joint still runs idle, carefully turn the posterior alignment screw further in. Check the result.
